Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorder
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental condition that affects how a person connects, communicates, and interacts with others.
People with autism may:
People with autism may:
- Struggle to pick up on social cues, like facial expressions or tone of voice
- Have trouble with back-and-forth conversation
- Use little eye contact, unusual body language, or few gestures
- Show limited facial expressions, making it harder for others to read their emotions
- Speak in a flat or “robot-like” tone
They may also:
- Engage in repetitive movements or behaviors (such as hand-flapping or rocking)
- Have difficulty switching from one activity to another
- Experience strong emotional reactions or meltdowns, sometimes triggered by things that seem small to others
- Develop very intense, specific interests or hobbies
- Be overly sensitive to sounds, textures, lights, smells, or other sensory input—or, in some cases, show little response to these things
Because autism looks different in every individual, it’s described as a spectrum. Some people may have mild challenges, while others may need much more daily support.
